Why Biblical Counselling?

Biblical Ministry focuses itself on facilitating inner healing under the direction of the Holy Spirit to those who have the need to live a life of victory in Jesus Christ. He, Jesus, has already died on the cross for us as a reconciliation sacrifice to cancel the consequences of our sin, but to live in total freedom, there is still restoration that should take place. As a starting point, we must understand that God the Father created humankind to be triune beings too. We are created according to his image (Genesis 1:26; 7:2). We, therefore, comprise of a body, soul and spirit. Paul explained this concept more than 2000 years ago in 1 Thessalonians 5:23:

“And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

There is confusion over the concepts of soul and spirit, and many believers are under the impression that it is the same. Hebrews 4:12 proves that there is a distinction in this:

For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

In a book written by Watchman Nee (1968:21) “The Spiritual Man” He also echoes that mankind is primarily living spiritual beings. We also have a soul in an earthly body. It is important to differentiate between these three elements because renewal happens herein at different levels and at different times. When a person repents and accepts Jesus Christ as a personal Savior, a brand-new Spirit-man is born. The spirit becomes spotless and sanctified. This is the ultimate reason for Jesus ‘ cross-death. He came as the last Adam to restore our standing before God. The next step in this sanctifying process is to place your fleshly self as described in Romans 12:2 under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Paul mentions that we must live blameless to Jesus ‘ return (1 Thessalonians. 5:23). It can only be done with the Holy Spirit within us.

As a Biblical Counsellor, it is important to explain to the client that in rebirth (when we surrender our entire being to Jesus Christ), our spirit becomes reborn, and becomes spiritual holy ground. However, our soul and body are still subject to the consequences of the fall and should now (after rebirth) be taken through a process of sanctification to take care of healing and victory.

Our hearts are extremely important to Jesus and scripture also warns us to protect our hearts (Proverbs 4:23). He knows what is good for us and calls every born-again Christian to submit to a process of inner healing, deliverance, sanctification in our soul (translated as heart as with our spirit). So, we have to start living holy because our testimonies are not only stronger, but we begin to look into our words, deeds and thoughts and what we allow into our lives. 1 Peter 1:14-16 explains:

“as children of obedience, not fashioning yourselves according to your former lusts in the time of your ignorance: but like as he who called you is holy, be ye yourselves also holy in all manner of living; because it is written, Ye shall be holy; for I am holy.”

At the beginning when God created humankind, he thought it well to give everyone a living soul who would separate him or her from other people. Watchman Nee (1968:36) explains that our soul exists of our will, intellect and emotions. The soul is bestowed on us to have the ability to get in relationship with the world around us. It is also in this part where most of our assassinations from the evil one occurs. This is especially true after our conversion, because people are spiritually more defenceless, like newborn babies. Man’s will is a tremendously important part of our soul component, as we have been given a free choice. Not even God the Father will manipulate a man’s will because he wants us to choose Him through obedience to his voice, as the Spirit and Word guide us.

Man’s emotions are the part of the soul that we can refer to as feelings. It includes joy, excitement, sadness, reproach, guilt, longing, and so on. In many cases, this part of the soul is equal to a battleground and is the greatest target for evil one’s attacks. The Enemy uses any tactics to besiege our soul and break us down.

Once the client realizes that the soul and the spirit are not the same, the client will begin to understand that their salvation does not depend on the condition of their soul dimension. It is therefore imperative to explain that the sanctifying process only affects the quality of our life on Earth and that your salvation does not depend on it.

Watchman No (1968:79) explains Jesus ‘ death on the cross happened once and the workings of the Holy Spirit takes place daily. It is an ongoing battle:

“The cross of Christ deals with sin and the Holy Spirit through the cross treats of self. Christ delivers the believer completely from the power of sin through the cross that sin may not reign again; but by the Holy Spirit who dwells in the believer, Christ enables him to overcome self daily and to obey Him perfectly. Liberation from sin is an accomplished fact: denial of self is to be a daily experience”

Sanctification brings a greater intimacy between you and the Trinity; It strengthens obedience and obedience generates blessings. That blessing manifests as grace in our lives.
